Prof Rosemary Monahan is the Pillar Lead for Data Security, Privacy & Governance. Prof Monahan is a Computer Scientist in the Department of Computer Science and the Hamilton Institute at Maynooth University. She has over 20 years’ experience in research, securing national and European funding developing tools and techniques that ensure dependable software systems. Her research, funded by Enterprise Ireland and the H2020 ESCEL JU programme, focuses on improved workflows and tools for verification and validation of safety critical software, impacting the software development process through interaction with 13 industrial use-cases from automotive, agriculture, railway, healthcare, aerospace and robotics domains. Here, the issues of data safety, security, privacy and governance are to the fore, alongside ethics, trustworthiness and the explainability of complex systems. Prof. Monahan is co-founder of the international VerifyThis competition series, bringing together academic and industrial users of tools which guarantee the correctness and reliability of software systems. She is funded by Science Foundation Ireland Frontiers for the Future to investigate techniques to support the trustworthiness and explainability of AI based-systems. She is a Funded Investigator in the SFI ADAPT 2 Centre where she works alongside co-applicant, and colleague in MU, Prof John Kelleher, on analysing, transforming and generating digital content, ensuring explainability and understanding of sophisticated AI models.
