Cipher AI is a game-based AI language learning platform designed to transform how languages are taught and learned through the integration of artificial intelligence, adaptive learning, and inclusive design. Building on established research at DCU, Cipher AI has demonstrated effectiveness in Irish-language learning, with evidence of improved vocabulary acquisition, literacy outcomes, and learner motivation (Xu, 2025).
Unlike conventional language-learning applications that rely primarily on gamified repetition exercises, Cipher AI delivers a fully interactive game-based learning environment that combines Natural Language Processing (NLP), Text-to-Speech (TTS), and Text-to-Image (TTI) technologies. The platform dynamically generates learning experiences tailored to individual learners while incorporating literacy support for both dyslexic and non-dyslexic users, enabling a more inclusive approach to language education.
This 18-month Translational Research Project will advance Cipher AI from a validated research platform to a commercial-ready product, initially focusing on English-language learning to maximise market potential while retaining the capability to expand into additional global languages. The project will refine the AI learning engine, strengthen the user experience, validate market demand, and establish the foundations for commercial deployment.
By project completion, Cipher AI will deliver a scalable, AI-enabled language learning platform ready for market entry, creating an opportunity to establish a leading position in inclusive, personalised language education technology.
