About the project

Construction remains one of the least digitised industries globally, with fragmented, inconsistent and multilingual data creating significant barriers to efficiency, benchmarking and sustainability reporting.

Developed at the University of Galway, DataBuilt is an innovative, two-stage AI platform designed to transform how construction data is understood, organised and used. The platform automatically classifies multilingual construction descriptions into standardised categories and matches materials with carbon databases, turning complex, unstructured information into reliable, structured data in minutes rather than days.

By capturing expert knowledge and applying it consistently across projects, organisations and languages, DataBuilt reduces time-consuming manual work, supports more efficient cost estimation and procurement, and enables more scalable carbon assessment and reporting. Crucially, data remains within each organisation's own environment.

With growing demand for accurate carbon reporting under the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), DataBuilt addresses a significant and increasingly urgent market need. The platform is designed to support cost and sustainability consultancies, providing the structured data that existing construction software and AI-driven analysis tools depend on but often cannot access.

Commercial interest is already demonstrated through a commissioned research partnership with KOSMOS. With an annual subscription model and a pathway towards spin-out formation, DataBuilt aims to make construction data more accessible, consistent and valuable.

Our vision is to make construction data work smarter – enabling better decisions, more efficient projects and a more sustainable built environment.
