Transmission system operators (TSOs) manage the high-voltage electricity grids that underpin national energy systems. Worldwide, more than 200 TSOs rely on a small number of specialist grid planning and simulation software platforms to evaluate network upgrades and future infrastructure needs. However, the outputs from these tools are designed for power systems engineers and remain difficult for non-technical decision-makers to interpret.
This creates a significant communication barrier: executives and policymakers responsible for approving grid investments worth hundreds of millions of euros cannot easily understand the engineering analysis that informs critical infrastructure decisions. Existing grid simulation platforms do not address this usability and communication challenge.
FlowVis is a visualisation platform that transforms complex grid simulation outputs into intuitive, interactive diagrams designed for senior decision-makers. The platform represents power flows visually, with elements such as line width indicating capacity and interactive exploration enabling users to trace the origin and destination of electricity flows without requiring specialist engineering knowledge.
The challenge is global and consistent across TSOs, creating a scalable software opportunity without the need for country-specific customisation. The initial target market is the 39 TSOs operating across Europe, providing a focused entry point into a worldwide market of potential customers. This project will deliver the first commercial product, validate user requirements with industry partners, and establish the foundation for global deployment.
